KON
Dedicated crate digger, edit maestro, and dream selector are just some of the terms used to describe the incredible KON. The modest ‘King Of Nothing’ has been collecting records since 1976 and spinning them in clubs for three decades. He holds a rare groove wisdom, acquired by his lifetime devotion to music. As a youngster in his native Boston he inherited a love for percussion from his drumming father, went vinyl hunting at local stores, and frequented roller discos with his mum, soaking up the soulful, funky sounds of the late 70s. A few years later, upon visiting family in NYC, he would tape radio recordings of hip hop pioneers like Mr. Magic, Marley Marl and Red Alert cutting, scratching, and blending records in the early 80s. He realised he had some of the music they were playing in his own collection, and was inspired to put his mixing skills to the test as a young teen. These recordings also opened him up to a whole world of samples that he didn’t know, which inspired him to dig deeper. Following more than a decade of DJing and seeking out unearthed gems, his career really started to blossom when he began producing records in the early 90s as part of the group ‘Mikst Nutz’. Their music received tons of support from Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito on their popular New York radio show. The next big step came when he unselfishly revealed hundreds of forgotten and hidden tracks to a new audience through his first iconic On Track compilation in the late 90s, with partner in crime Amir, sampling the likes of Roy Ayers, Eddie Kendricks, and Quincy Jones in the mix album. Shortly after this, he part-produced the J.Treds Make It Happen 12" on Bobbito's Fondle Em' imprint, which also put out staple records like MF Doom’s Operation: Doomsday and then the Ripshop Versus 12" on Rawkus, an important hip hop label which launched the career of Mos Def. Later, more On Track comps followed in the early 2000s. These were goldmines for any DJ, producer, or music lover, earning Kon & Amir praise from Mark Ronson, Dr Dre and many more. A subsequent Off Track series followed in the late 2000s, which received the same accolades. Not satisfied with just tracking down rare vinyl, KON’s reputation was only enhanced when he began putting out his own edits and remixes of these finds, such as his quick mix of Le Stim’s Tribute To Muhammad Ali. It wasn’t only rarities that benefited from KON’s magic touch, as he breathed new life into classic records like Cerrone’s Hooked On You and more, sometimes releasing under the excellent ‘Kon & The Gang’ moniker. The classic remixes kept rolling in 2013 when he launched Startime Records; a platform for his reworks of big hits from the likes of Chaka Khan, Donna Summer, and George Benson. In recent years, he unveiled a new joint project called ‘The Vision’ on which he released the huge hit Heaven on the staple Defected Records, which made its way into record bags worldwide. Always evolving, he now has an exciting new venture called ‘Saturday Love’ with Bronx-born Italian singer-songwriter Fiorious. Watch out for their first single out on Fools Gold this month. KON sets the standard high with his unrivalled bag of edits and honest, soulful music with depth and passion. His edits and white labels are world famous, and his ability to work a dance floor has seen him grace the decks at the world’s most famed clubs and parties. A night with KON is a night to remember.
